A Cuban vaquero, or cowboy, sits astride his horse at his small, roadside ranch in the south central province of Camaguey. Much of the island, 90 miles long, is rural—land, once jungle, cleared long ago and now cultivated as tobacco, sugar cane and edible crops or used as pasture.
